District custodians continue to fight for fair treatment

Leftover food clogs the staircases and trash floods out of garbage bins in and around the school. How often do you think about the mess you make? Who do you think cleans it up? What do you think Grant High School would look like if no one was working hard to keep our facilities in good repair and our halls, classrooms and restrooms mopped up? We should be thankful we won't have to find that out ourselves; our custodians are under contract for the next few years. But there aren't nearly as many workers as we've had in years past. And we might give some thought to making their jobs a little easier.

Lincoln letter prank addresses taboo topics

It is now known across the nation that Portland, Ore., has the best senior pranks. As almost everyone has heard by now, Lincoln seniors pulled a prank that took local news stations by storm, and even made it to CNN's 24-hour cable news channel. The students sent out a letter on PPS letterhead to over 600 Lincoln homes, asking parents to open their homes to students after prom so they could have a safe place to be sexually active and drink.

This sounds ridiculous, but it really is creative.

Cordeta gets a foot in the door

For Grant senior Jonathon Cordeta, AKA J-Young, music is no part time hobby; quite the contrary, it defines his lifestyle and, if all goes according to plan, will soon become the basis of his career. Stressing the importance of music in his life, Cordeta explains that, "music, to me, is what basketball is to LeBron James." Clearly, Cordetta's music is not to be taken lightly; put simply, he's one serious dude.

Ebonics and the politics of language

"Language is how you define yourself as a human being, and if you can't express that, you can't express yourself," said Jacoa Thomas after she and Alauno Porter taught "Ebonics Jeopardy," to Lewis and Clark graduate students on March 5, 2008, quizzing their knowledge of linguistic elements in Ebonics. The graduate students, who are working to become language arts teachers, seemed eager to have the Grant students in their midst.

Block keeps his eye on winning PIL for men's tennis

As the spring season continues on Grant's outdoor courts, the men's tennis team hopes to regroup after a disappointing loss to Wilson High School. The senior leaders that front the Generals' top twelve are confident that they will be able to rebound, and lead their young team to a league championship.

Senior John Block, the Generals' number one singles varsity player, took the loss especially personally.
