The leading questions asked by Democrats in the most recent Supreme Court nominee hearings have been purely antagonistic — obvious attempts at instantly disqualifying the candidate — and severely lacked constructive examination. The attempts to expose biases that would automatically terminate the nominee’s candidacy were completely transparent and antithetical to the whole purpose of judicial inquiry. As a result, this distinct abuse of power is turning the Democratic Party of the 21st century into something it never wanted to be: the Republican Party of the late 20th century. Indeed, voting blue in the next elections may not be that much better of a choice for traditional Democrats than voting Republican. And this is pretty unfortunate, too, because with all the pitfalls and supposed crookedness of the Bush administration, the desire for a change of command should be much stronger. But, as Democratic Illinois Sen. Barack Obama stated in a recent NYTimes.com article, “people think this country is going in the wrong direction… they’re not sure yet whether Democrats can move it in the right direction.” The main problem is that the party seems to be missing specific objectives. So much energy is spent exposing scandal and putting the opposition in a bad light that national concerns, which should be attended to as elections approach, remain largely unaddressed. Said Gov. Phil Bredesen of Tennessee in the NYTimes.com article, “We’re selling our party short; you’ve got to stand for a lot more than just blasting the other side.” The current attitude of the Democratic Party is not just bothersome; it’s bad politics. The party seems so obsessed with its childlike peevishness and attempts to discredit the current administration that it isn’t focused on what is most important: taking productive advantage of the downfalls of the current presidency, and ensuring the support of voters. |

What is popularity? Is it how many people you know, or who you hang out with? While it can be defined by both of these qualities, it is deeper and more important than that. Popularity is how people view you and their willingness to take you as a friend and hang out with you. In our high school world, popularity can be narrowed down to a few main things: smarts can help someone gain respect in class, and personality is a major factor in selecting friends but appearance is most crucial in determining someone’s first impression of another person. |

A radical climate afflicts you as you wander the streets of this foreign land. The people are awkward and distant; the food is inedible and scarce. It could be a scene from “Survivor,” but this is no exotic island—this is college. No, not all experiences are like this, but the only way to know is to find out for yourself. That means going on an always-exciting campus visit. |

On Jan. 25, the Palestinian militant organization Hamas won the first Palestinian congressional elections held in over 10 years in a landslide victory. Winning a 70-seat majority in the 132-seat Palestinian parliament and overthrowing the then ruling Fatah party, the victory brought outcry from both Israel and the United States. The militant organization has, on repeated occasions, called for the complete destruction of the state of Israel. One of the main concerns from nations such as the United States, European Union and Russia is Hamas’ resistance to disarm its operations and renounce its violence against Israel. All of these nations have voiced concern that Hamas will lose critical foreign aid for Palestinians if they do not follow such requests. |

As January comes to an end, February is soon to come - and with it brings that consumerist orgy we all know and love, Valentine’s Day. A day that could only be brought to you by the caring people of Hallmark, just waiting to cash in on another pointless holiday. |
