This coming Tuesday, Barack Obama will be sworn into the presidency. While three million are expected to watch the ceremony live in Washington D.C., Grant students will be watching the inauguration in school during a school-wide assembly. The assembly is scheduled to run for almost two hours in the morning with classes shortened to 35 minutes. The schedule for Tuesday, Jan. 20 is as follows: |

Ecology is arguably the most open-ended class that Grant offers. There’s no textbook except for field guides, meaning no “canned” curriculum. Student
study birdcalls, test the dissolved oxygen levels or water, and learn the meteorological impact of topography. Often the class doesn’t involve note taking or PowerPoint presentations, but rather an open-ended class discussion about environmental topics. Most importantly,
students spend every other block period monitoring the changing conditions at their ecology site. |

Alli Swift addressed a really interesting issue in the
last Grantonian: dance behavior. After talking to her
and other students, I found that a lot of students don’t
want to be stuck with this one way to dance (having
pseudo sex in a crowd of people basically), but that
there is a pervasive belief that there’s nothing they
can do about it. Several students said that they don’t
even go to the dances any more because of it. I heard
comments like, “It’s gross,” “It’s weird,” “It’s kinda
creepy.” For the more exhibitionistically inclined, I
guess these comments wouldn’t make sense, but for
many people having genital-to-genital contact (albeit
with some cloth in between) in front of a bunch of
middle aged parents and administrators looking on is
not their idea of a good time. Think about it. Would
you rather do these same things in private or with all
these people hovering around you? |
