In 2004, Shaffer Chimere Smith, aka "Ne-Yo," wrote the song "Let Me Love You" for Mario Barrett, and it became the most played song in radio history. Two years later he released his platinum selling
album "In My Own Words," and the music world officially knew that Ne-Yo was a force to be reckoned with on the mic, and with the power of the pen. Although his first single "Stay" didn’t immediately launch him into the limelight, the Stargate produced "So Sick" catapulted him into the frontlines of success, and the song stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 list for a staggering period of time. It is now 2008 and Ne-Yo has released his third album in three years, and with singles like "Closer" and "Miss Independent," it would seem that this album will give us quite the kick 2008 needs for good music releases. So with that in mind, does "Year of the Gentlemen" expand on what made Ne-Yo a household name? Well in every sense, yes it does. In fact this is the first album this year where every track manages
to be very well penned and sung, with a decent amount of tracks, and without any filler in sight. |

For Grant senior Jonathon Cordeta, AKA
J-Young, music is no part time hobby; quite the contrary, it defines
his lifestyle and, if all goes according to plan, will soon become
the basis of his career. Stressing the importance of music in his
life, Cordeta explains that, "music, to me, is what basketball
is to LeBron James." Clearly, Cordetta's music is not to
be taken lightly; put simply, he's one serious dude. |

It's safe to say that senior
Manny Chester is a laid back guy. His chill demeanor might lead an
uninformed observer to falsely assume that Manny is indifferent about
pretty much everything, as is the custom among his peers. In fact,
Chester is one of the most talented and accomplished young musicians
at Grant; his recent acceptance to one of the world's premiere
music institution, the Manhattan School of Music, is testament to the
fact that Chester is one dedicated jazz pianist.

When she was a child, senior Berlin
Wagar-Kim got dragged around to various art galleries by her father.
She commented that she "absolutely hated it." Upon
reaching high school, she came to realize that her mind is, in fact,
"art oriented." Today, art has become a major part of her
life and high school career.
Wagar-Kim is a student in Grant teacher
Judi Brandel's AP Art Studio class. When describing her
experience in the class, she says that "it has opened up a lot
of new interests" for her that she hadn't discovered
before. |

While its membership has been
undoubtedly lackluster, the most consistent members of the
Superintendent's Student Advisory Council (SuperSAC) have
decided to host a district-wide film festival at Benson Polytechnic
High School. Tentatively set for May 21, the Rose City Youth Film
Festival is an event in which all students who attend a Portland
Public High School are encouraged to participate. |
