For several months now, the clocks
perched on the walls of nearly every room
in Grant High School have been afflicted
with a chronic case of bad timing—literally.
Since late autumn, Grant’s clocks
have been set to two minutes ahead of the
‘official’ Portland time, baffling students
and teachers alike with our own unique
time zone. |

Unlike students at the winter semiformal
dance, a majority of parents may
be in the dark on the current dancing done
by today’s high schoolers. Unless a parent
chooses to chaperone one of these dances,
the closest thing they have probably seen
to it is in the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing.
Principal Joe Malone was shocked when
he first saw it, a form of dancing which

Wilson as, “A boy standing behind a girl
and humping her as if they were dogs

“grinding”, but today’s teens just call it
dancing. This type of dancing has been
going on for years, and it seems to be this
generation’s dance of choice. |

Social studies teacher Kevin Alvord
points at the surface of his large wooden

his classroom. Within the fi rst semester
of this school year, six of the teachers
from the north basement of Grant High
School have had at least one classroom
break-in. All of them have reported stolen
property belonging to the Portland Public
School District. |

In Southeast Portland, nestled between
Sellwood and the Willamette River,
is a 160-acre wetland and its gate-keeper.
Standing guard over Oaks Bottom Wildlife
Refuge is a 70-foot-tall great blue
heron painted on the western wall of the
Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Soon this
heron will be joined by 50,282 square feet
of avian wildlife. The expanded mural
is expected to be finished in May 2009
and, upon completion, will be the largest
mural in North America. |
