Clock conundrum confounds Grant

For several months now, the clocks perched on the walls of nearly every room in Grant High School have been afflicted with a chronic case of bad timing—literally. Since late autumn, Grant’s clocks have been set to two minutes ahead of the ‘official’ Portland time, baffling students and teachers alike with our own unique time zone.

No love for the ‘hot sweaty hump mass’

Unlike students at the winter semiformal dance, a majority of parents may be in the dark on the current dancing done by today’s high schoolers. Unless a parent chooses to chaperone one of these dances, the closest thing they have probably seen to it is in the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing. Principal Joe Malone was shocked when he first saw it, a form of dancing which was described by Vice Principal Curtis Wilson as, “A boy standing behind a girl and humping her as if they were dogs in heat.” Critics call it sex with clothes on, the web calls it “freak dancing” or “grinding”, but today’s teens just call it dancing. This type of dancing has been going on for years, and it seems to be this generation’s dance of choice.

Anyone who works in a darkroom does some chemistry by developing photos, but not all have the kind of intangible chemistry that allows them to say they find photography “relaxing and satisfying,” especially when a photo doesn’t turn out according to plan.

Basement break-ins continue

Social studies teacher Kevin Alvord points at the surface of his large wooden desk. “There were footprints along here,” he says, describing the recent break-in of his classroom. Within the fi rst semester of this school year, six of the teachers from the north basement of Grant High School have had at least one classroom break-in. All of them have reported stolen property belonging to the Portland Public School District.

Largest mural in North America in portland's backyard

In Southeast Portland, nestled between Sellwood and the Willamette River, is a 160-acre wetland and its gate-keeper. Standing guard over Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge is a 70-foot-tall great blue heron painted on the western wall of the Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Soon this heron will be joined by 50,282 square feet of avian wildlife. The expanded mural is expected to be finished in May 2009 and, upon completion, will be the largest mural in North America.
