As Grant’s 2009-2010 school year budget faces more and more cuts, Grant loses faculty and classes. There are a number of cuts that have already been made to Grant’s staff for the next year and Principal Joseph Malone imagines that some classes will have to be cut as well. Several teachers have volunteered to reduce their positions to part time. In the math department, Renee Anderson has stepped down to 80 percent of full time. In the art department, Jamin London-Tinsel is going from 80 percent to half-time. In social studies, Cassandre Lanzas will be going to 60 percent. In science, Bruce Marron will go to half-time and Walt Hollands will return, half-time, from a leave of absence. Bob Doltar is retiring at the end of the year, [see profile above] and almost as though to illustrate just how irreplaceable he is, his position is not being filled. These voluntary reductions were not enough, however, to save Malone from having to layoff a few faculty as well. The dean position, filled most recently by Tracy Osterhagen, has been eliminated. Osterhagen's seniority then will bump English teacher Bryon Chappell out of his position, if Osterhagen chooses to return to the classroom. In addition to those teachers, Malone has eliminated the half-time position of Drug and Alcohol Counselor and the half-time position of Activities Director, both held by Cynthia Zrinyi. Malone's plan is to farm her various duties out to different faculty. He said that for instance, school counselors might cover the drug and alcohol hearings, and student government representatives might need to take on other additional activities duties. Malone also eliminated the 20 percent position for yearbook held by otherwise-retired teacher and coach Doug Winn. The fate of the yearbook class for next year is still up in the air. It might become a club activity with a volunteer adviser, or other funding sources might be found to bring it back as a class. If Malone cuts additional classes, that means additional teachers will need to reduce their status and pay as well |
